Obtaining a NIE number is relatively straightforward. Go to a National Police station and fill in an application form. You should receive your NIE number within a few days.

Social security number for living in Spain

If you are planning on living in Spain and need to work to support yourself then a social security number is required. Your contributions will be deducted by your employer when paying your salary.

On receipt of this number you become entitled to social security benefits. You will also be entitled to medical care and only have to pay contributions when you are living in Spain and earning money at the same time.

The process of obtaining this number involves going to any social security office, with your original passport plus a copy. You will have to fill in a form and the number is issued there and then.

It is not necessary to have a job, or even a NIE to get a social security number. The benefits you receive are paid on a pro rata basis according to what contributions you make. Foreigners moving to Spain are not eligible for social security benefits immediately.

People moving to Spain who intend to reside there on a permanent basis may apply for a form or permit called residenciaIt is NOT compulsory for EU citizens to obtain residencia but there are many advantages to having one. For example, if you wish to obtain credit or start a business. Possessors of residencia may also find it easier to do things such as buying property in Spain.

Pensioners retiring to Spain MUST obtain residencia. They are issued by the National Police department and forms can be obtained at the nearest station. You will also need to supply:

  • Three colour passport-style photographs
  • Your original passport and two copies, title deeds or a rental contract proving your Spanish address
  • A work contract of six months minimum length (and copy)

A fee of around £4 is paid into the bank and you will need the receipt for your application.
